This scholarship was established to honor the late Illinois Federation of Teachers' president Jacqueline B. Vaughn. Her commitment and dedication were hallmarks of her nearly four decades in the teacher union movement. She was elected IFT president in 1989 and completing her third term of office when she died of cancer in 1994. She was also a member of the AFT Executive Council and chaired the AFT Task Force on School Safety and Violence.

AFT Local 604 is offering a $2,000 scholarship to dependents of all Local 604 members. The annual scholarship award program requires all applicants to write an essay about labor union history and its impact on their lives.

Scholarship Rules

  1. Application must be postmarked no later than Monday, March 9, 2009.
  2. Applicant must be a public high school senior with a "B" cumulative average..
  3. Applicant must be in the upper half of his/her class.
  4. Parent(s) or guardian must be an AFT Local 604 member in good standing.
  5. All applications will remain confidential.
  6. Scholarships will be presented to the winners upon proof of enrollment at any state college or university in Illinois.
  7. The following must be submitted with this application:
    1. copy of ACT and/or SAT test score
    2. transcript from high school
    3. statement of family income for 2008 (W-2's)
    4. completion of essay, "Labor History and Its Impact on My Life: What I Have Gained and What I Intend to Give Back."
  8. First, second and third runners-up will be recorded in the event that either or both of the winners are unable to accept the scholarship because of an infraction of the rules.
